Gautam Shantilal Adani famously known as Adani was born on 24 june 1962. He was born in the business city of India Ahmedabad, Gujarat. His father’s name was Shantilal Adani and his mother’s name was Shantaben Adani. His father Shantilal Adani was a small local textile merchant. He had done his schooling from Seth Chimanlal Nagindas Vidyalaya in his home town Ahmedabad. After his schooling, he went into Gujarat University for his bachelor’s degree in commerce. Gautam Adani – Journey from a college dropout to becoming Asia’s richest person

We all know this fact that Gautam Adani is currently the 17th richest man in all over world. But very few people know about the struggle of his life. The story of Adani’s life is very Inspiring. He proves that a middle class boy can do whatever he wants to do and can achieve anything he wants to achieve.

As we all know that Adani was from a business city of india and from a business family as well. So, from his early age his mindset was like a businessman. His father was a small textile merchant in Ahmedabad. So, he used to go there. He was very good at business but he was not interested in the textile industry. So, he dropped out of his collage and moved to mumbai in 1978 to work as a diamond sorter for mahindra brothers. He learnt a lot from that job. He worked there for almost 3 years.

In 1981, his elder brother Mahasukhbhai Adani bought a plastic unit in Ahmedabad and invited Gautam Adani to join him in that business. Mahasukhbhai gave the operations work to him. After many ups and down, hopefully this venture was a great success for them and it turned out to be Adani’s gateway to global trading through polyvinyl chloride (PVC) Imports. In 1985, he started importing primary polymers for small scale industries.

Time passes, in 1985, he decided to export agricultural and power commodities. So, he established Adani Exports, which is now known as Adani Enterprises. Adani Enterprises is a holding company of Adani Groups. This exporting business was resulted in favour of him. In 1991, the economic liberalization policies also turned out to be favorable for his company. And he started expanding the businesses into trading of metals, textiles and agro products. Adani exports achieved all the success he could achieve.

Time passes, another success of Adani’s journey comes in 1994. In that year, the Gujrat Government announced managerial outsourcing of Mundra Port, and in 1995, Adani got the contract. In 1995, he set up the first jetty. Originally operated by Mundra Port & Special Economic Zone, the operations were transferred to Adani Ports & SEZ (APSEZ). And today the company is the largest private multi-port operator. Mundra port is the largest private sector port in india, with the capacity of handling close to 210 million tons of cargo per annum.

After one year, in 1996, Gautam Adani founded another company Adani Power. Adani Power holds thermal power plants with a capacity of 4620MW. And today, Adani Power is the largest private thermal power producer of the country. Adani power is also a great success for Adani. In 2006, Adani entered in the power generation business. From 2009 to 2012, he acquired Abbot point point in Australia and Carmichael Coal mine in Quineesland.

In May 2020, Adani won the world’s largest solar bid by the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) worth $6 billion. The 8000MW photovoltaic power plant project will be taken up by Adani Green; Adani Solar will establish 2000MW of additional solar cell and module manufacturing capacity.

Acquisitions

• In September 2020, Adani acquired a 74% stake in Mumbai International Airport. And for your knowledge, Mumbai International Airport is the second busiest airport in India after Delhi.

• In 2021, while speaking at the Bloomberg India Economic Forum, Adani said his group is investing $70 billion in a new green business. And after one year, in July 2022, he offered new details on how this investment will be utilized to build three giant factories – the first is Solar, second is Electrolyzer ( it will use to make green hydrogen) and the third is Turbine plants.

• Let’s go 2 month back, in May 2022, Adani family acquired Ambuja cements and it’s subsidiary ACC for Holcim Group for $10.5, through an overseas special purpose entity.

Controversy

In August 2022, AMG Media Network Limited (AMNL) which is also a unit of Adani Group declared that it planned to buy RRPR Holding, owner of 29.18% of national news broadcaster NDTV, and made an open offer to buy a further 26%. In a statement, NDTV said that Adani acquired hus stake via a third party without informing the company’s founders. Because of this there are lots of controversies is going on. This bid also raised concern regarding editorial independence of India, since Adani is considered to be close to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ruling BJP.

In March 2020, he contributed $13 million to the PM Cares fund through his group’s philanthropy arm to fight the Coronavirus Outbreak. A contribution of $630,000 was made to the Gujarat CM relief fund and $130,000 to the Maharashtra CM relief fund.

Adani led diversified conglomerate Adani Group imported four ISO Cryogenic tanks filled with 80 metric tons of liquid medical oxygen from Dammam in Saudi Arabia to Mundra in Gujarat. The group also secured 5,000 medical-grade oxygen cylinders from Linde Saudi Arabia. In a Twitter post, Adani shared that each day his group is supplying 1,500 cylinders with medical oxygen to wherever they are needed in Kutch district of Gujarat. In June 2022, Adani has committed to donate Rs 60,000 crore ($7.7 billion) to social causes. Adani corpus will be administered by the Adani Foundation, making it one of the biggest transfer to a philanthropic trust in India.
